Ken Follett
The Pillars of the earth

Opinion

It seems to me that the books I like to read cannot be thick enough. Like 'IT' the 'Pillars of the earth' again has more than 1.000 pages in the paperback edition. So it's the first choice for anybody who wants to go on vacation for more than 3 weeks and still carry just one book .

And therefore it's quite difficult to describe the content of the book in few lines. No summary can be sufficient for this gigantic work, that doesn't omit one possible human emotion. Love and hate, loyalty and fraud, hope and despair.

I'm not even bothered that the story takes place in the dark middle ages, a fact, that usually keeps me from reading a book. It begins with an execution in the year 1123 and ends 51 years later with another one.

You need patience to get to know the main characters but - like in any near perfect story - your patience pays off.
