Is there a more well-known symbol for the Australia tourist than the one picture everyone has? The sunset at the Ayers Rock? Probably not. And so we really looked forward to the moment, in which we should see the monolith face to face. Unfortunately our van didn't want us to have this pleasure. It didn't drive particularly well that day and so we didn't reach the sunset point, but had to deal with a small outlook on our campground.
Somehow it was a different atmosphere from there. Sure, it was an impressive sight, but didn't move us emotionally as the sunset at Devils Marbles did.
That changed the next day. We rose at 5 o'clock and drove to the sunrise observation point(together with hundreds of other tourists). Our tourguide did a miracle with a well recognized breakfast. And then the sun rose. In this moment we felt the magic which proceeds from the large red stone. At first just in the shade, then glowing a deep red, that got brighter every second.
The three-hour walk around Uluru (the aboriginal name for Ayers Rock) was one of the major experiences in that vacation. The details of the Rock are fascinating, the weather was brilliant - a perfect day.
Images 8 to 10 were taken in 2002, the other pictures are from 2000.

Faszinating color-display with the red rocks, the deep blue sky and the dry gras
surrounding the rocks

4. Silent Scream
Taken at our campground near Ayers Rock. Did you know that birds do yoga? No?
Look again.
5. View
No. It's no snapshop. Joerg did have to stand still for a few minutes until I
had what I wanted. But I like it. Yes. Definitly
6. Harmony
No other title for the image came to mind. And somehow the name reflects the
mood of the whole day. My favorite motif around Ayers Rock
7. Rock
At many places around Ayers Rock you may take no photographs. And I complied with
these request. Almost always
8.-9. Ayers Rock
How else could it be. Naturally I couldn't miss this perspective. And of course it has
to be in the gallery. Ayers Rock at sunset
