I walk with Beatrice on Elizabeth Street to the north, toward Circular Quay. My eyes move from left to right. We pass Hyde Park and it looks a bit of English to me - at least it feels that way. Then the first skycrapers show up and suddenly the city looks something american. Quite american, when we pass the Coca Cola Building. But nothing exciting, nothing special. Why should Sydney be such so special city?
At the Wentworth hotel we cross into Philipp Street and are only a short distance from the harbour. I can smell the water, I like cities at the water. But still nothing that takes my breath away. It is early in the morning, the air is cool and fresh. Left of us we pass Circular Quay. And then - suddenly - the opera emerges, seen a thousand times in pictures, described by friends. But nevertheless I can't describe the feeling when I saw the opera with my own eyes. There was only one comparable moment for me - the first crossing if the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
The Opera house, Harbour Bridge, the harbour, the lighthouse at Watsons Bay. Even the zoo - completely special. Darling Harbour, the Aquarium - unique. And the opera again. Something I will never forget.
