Great Barrier Reef

At 8 o'clock in the morning we rose in Cairns and drove to the port. Me and water. Can that be any good? I stuck a plaster behind my ear to avoid sea-sickness. And what can I say: it worked. We sailed to the (2000 miles long) Great Barrier Reef and took posession :-) of another ship, which we had almost for ourselves. 24 hours we spend there - and it were the most fascinating 24 hours of the vacation.

In three different places we explored the corral reef, snorkeling, diving or simply swimming around. I was bothered by the salt water... but not too much. The color and fish variety are overwhelming and made up for everything.

The evening wasn't less fascinating. First we spent one hour on a tiny island, which is homeland for thousands and thousands of birds and some water turtles. The twirping was deafening. And afterwards we enjoyed the sunset on the upper deck of our ship accompanied from Hawaiian guitar sounds.

It was really sad that we had to go back on the next day, after further diving courses and a little boomnetting. I will always remember this day as one of the best days I ever had on any vacation.

Little rope and many birds

7. Sharp view
Up to a meter I could approach the bird, who did not seem to take humans as a threat. Why should he. A million birds vs. 10 humans...

8./9. Final light
The colors were beautiful and nevertheless these pictures cannot express the feelings we had during this sunset. And above that the pictures cannot make you hear the noise of literally thousands of birds
